USA Today Criticizes Dental Scope Reform

Published on: September 21st, 2011

In a 9/20/2011 editorial, the USA Today criticizes the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) for seeking reform of the state’s dental practice laws to allow elective facial cosmetic surgery to be performed by qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS).  The editorial follows a series the newspaper recently published on poor cosmetic surgery outcomes.

NYSSOMS has been working very closely with NYSDA to help promote this scope reform in the New York State Legislature.  We fully support NYSDA’s position on this and we concur with their op-ed which is also published in the USA Today.  We are disappointed that USA Today has sought to identify our specialty as contributing to the problem that exists in cosmetic surgery, rather than recognizing that the training and education many of our members receive can lead them to competently perform many facial cosmetic surgeries.
