Scope of Practice Reform Passes NYS Senate

Published on: July 8th, 2010

On June 30, 2010, the New York State Senate passed an amendment to the NYS dental practice act that would allow board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons to perform additional procedures involving the hard and soft tissues in the oral and maxillofacial area.  The bill (S.8347) was backed by NYSSOMS and the New York State Dental Association.   Under this legislation,  a surgeon must first obtain privileges for such additional procedures from a NY hospital prior to performing them in their office.

We do not expect the bill to pass in the NYS assembly before this legislative session ends, but this victory in the Senate provides great momentum going into next year’s session.
