NYS Education Department Revises Dental Anesthesia Regulations

Published on: February 28th, 2017

In December, 2016, the New York State Education Department. revised their dental anesthesia regulations (Sec. 61.10).  The regulations are quite extensive so certificate holders should refer directly to Section 61.10 at the Education Dept.’s website to fully understand them.  Click here and scroll down to Section 61.10 to see the full regulation.

Since part of the regulation (definitions and  practice requirements)  become effective beginning July 1, 2017, while other parts (certification and the education & training requirements) are not effective until January 1, 2018, this website version includes some redundancy.

We have also drafted some highlights for OMS’s that can be downloaded here.  Lastly, Mr. Lance Plunkett, Esq., General Counsel for the New York State Dental Association, has written a good piece on this for the NYSDA Journal and that can be found here.

These new regulations will require dental anesthesia certificate-holders that renew their certificates in 2018 and thereafter to obtain twelve (12) hours of anesthesia-related continuing education since their last renewal.  This is exclusive of ACLS and PALS.  So, if you have not already registered for the March Annual Meeting, use this as an opportunity to satisfy some of these anesthesia CE hours.  Click here for more information.

If you have any questions on this, call the NYSSOMS office at 800-255-2100 and ask for Michael Herrmann.
